About me

Hello! My name is Renita Walker, and I was born and raised in Opelika, Alabama. Throughout my life, I've called several places home, including Georgia, North Carolina, Missouri, and Florida. Today, I'm back in Georgia, where another chapter of my journey continues to unfold.

If you asked me what I'm most proud of, my answer would be simple: my children. I never imagined that motherhood would become such a defining part of my life, but it has been one of my greatest blessings. Watching my children grow into amazing adults has been one of life's sweetest rewards. Another gift I've treasured is the opportunity to travel and experience different places, people, and cultures.

Life has given me many titles over the years—daughter, wife, mother, widow, Marcus' mom, Simone's mom, leader, co-worker, mentor, volunteer, grandmother ("GranGran"), and now, kidney patient. Those titles remind me that life is made up of seasons. Some seasons are filled with celebration, while others require incredible strength. Each one has shaped the woman I am today.

For 35 years, I balanced a career I was proud of while raising two wonderful children. After losing my husband, survival became my daily mindset. There were days when I didn't know how I would make it, but God's grace carried me through every challenge. People sometimes ask me how I did it, and my answer has always been, "But God." Life has not been easy, and there were seasons when working two jobs was simply what needed to be done. Through it all, my faith never stopped reminding me that I wasn't walking alone.

Serving others has always been close to my heart. Whether coordinating volunteers through my employer or giving my time to organizations such as Susan G. Komen, Girls on the Run, the Fox Theatre, the March of Dimes, or serving through my church, I've always believed that even the smallest act of kindness can make a lasting difference.

Today, I find myself entering yet another unexpected season.

In September 2025, I began feeling unusually tired. Thinking it was something minor, I visited my doctor for routine lab work. The very next day, I received a phone call that would change my life forever: "Go to the emergency room immediately."

After spending ten days in the hospital, I walked out with a diagnosis I never expected— needing dialysis.

While this isn't the chapter I would have chosen, it is the one I'm living. I refuse to let my diagnosis define me. Instead, I choose to let my faith, my hope, and my determination define this journey.

Today, I am actively searching for a compatible living kidney donor who can help restore my health and give me the opportunity to embrace life fully again. Becoming GranGran has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. There is nothing quite like watching my family grow and seeing the world through the eyes of my grandchildren. My greatest hope is to have many more years to laugh with them, cheer them on, celebrate life's milestones, and create lasting memories together. A Life Interrupted

I have always been an active member of my Georgia community, deeply devoted to my family, friends, my church family at Change Church, and serving my neighborhood. Serving others has never been something I simply did—it has been part of who I am. In fact, before my diagnosis, I was serving as an administrator on the Welcome Team at my church, helping create a warm and inviting experience for everyone who walked through the doors.

Then, in what felt like an instant, everything changed.

When I experienced sudden kidney failure, life came to a screeching halt. I spent the next nine months receiving in-center hemodialysis, a physically and emotionally demanding season that challenged me in ways I never imagined. But even in that difficult chapter, I was determined not to let my circumstances define me.

After careful thought and prayer, I decided to retire from a 35-year career. I chose to transition to peritoneal dialysis at home. It wasn't the easier path—it was the path that allowed me to take ownership of my care and become an active partner in my treatment. It requires discipline, courage, and faith, but it also gave me a renewed sense of purpose and control during an uncertain time.

Following extensive testing, I am feverishly to get approved for the kidney transplant waiting list but that can take 8-10 years. While I am grateful to have an opportunity to be on the list, I also know that the wait for a deceased donor can be long and unpredictable. That's why I have chosen, once again, to take an active role in my journey by searching for a living kidney donor.

I believe that hope requires action. My prayer is that somewhere, someone will read my story, feel a connection, and consider giving the extraordinary gift of life. Until then, I will continue to live with faith, gratitude, and the unwavering belief that God is still writing my story.
